BNSF’s Second-Quarter Income Declines as Intermodal Drops

Western freight rail line Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. earned $433 million or $1.20 a share for the second quarter, down from $471 million or $1.27 a year ago.

Freight revenue rose 4% to a second-quarter record $3.74 billion, BNSF said.

Consumer products revenue, which includes intermodal, was relatively flat at $1.4 billion on a 7%t reduction in unit volumes, the rail line said.

BNSF’s pricing should remain “strong” this year, Chief Executive Officer Matt Rose told Reuters following the earnings release, though growth may slow if volumes remain soft, he said.

BNSF operates in the western United States.
