California Bills Target Truck Delays at Ports

Two pieces of legislation calling for port operator fines for keeping trucks waiting and making intermodal chassis inspections tougher moved closer to passage in the California Legislature.

According to information from the Legislature, one bill would require port terminal operators to certify the safety of chassis they provide to truckers picking up containers. The other would fine port terminal operators that keep truckers waiting at the docks for more than 30 minutes.

The Assembly Appropriations Committee approved the chassis legislation Aug. 12 and sent it to a vote before the full Assembly. The Senate had passed the bill in May. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the California Trucking Association support the bill, which addresses the issue of chassis safety.
