Canada Proposes Stronger Underride Guards for Trailers

img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>Canada has proposed requiring new trailers to have rear underride guards stronger than those trucks must have in the United States.

The Canadian rule would require the same-size guard as the United States mandates but with more stringent strength, energy absorption and crashworthiness tests.

Transport Canada, the federal agency that regulates trucking, said in an Oct. 5 proposal that the U.S. underride standards "do not adequately protect the front-seat occupants of compact and subcompact automobiles from passenger compartment intrusion."
