Canadians Warned of Y2K Traffic Bug

OTTAWA, Ontario — Small towns and agencies in Canada are being advised to check their traffic equipment as soon as possible for problems in handling the change to the year 2000.

The advice follows a survey of members of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control by the Transportation Association of Canada. The survey indicated that many smaller areas are not preparing to deal with effects from a computer’s inability to recognize the new century.

Traffic flow, safety and emergency vehicle movements are some of the problems that might be encountered. In most cases, the survey found that computer servicing was being handled by traffic signal equipment manufacturers or distributors, rather than by governmental agencies.
