The move is the latest in a mad rush by trucking companies and logistics experts to set up electronic marketplaces in an effort to lower costs and reduce empty backhauls.

Cannon Express of Springdale, Ark., announced the formation of Carriersco-op.com, an online business aimed at helping smaller trucking companies exchange loads and compete with larger rivals and third-party non-asset-based transportation companies.
