Cargo Volumes Increase at Southern Calif., South Carolina Ports
Cargo volume increased in November over the previous year at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and at both of South Carolina’s seaports, port agencies said.
The Los Angeles port saw 683,849 20-foot equivalent unit containers in November, a 17.3% increase from a year prior, the port said in a Dec. 16 statement. Excluding empty container movements, imports and exports increased 20.2% to 521,422 TEUs.
So far in 2013, the Port of Los Angeles moved 7,215,223 TEUs, a 3.7% decrease from the same period last year.
The Port of Long Beach moved 569,599 TEUs in November, a 2.5% increase over last year, it said. Exports jumped 9.9% to 151,950, making the second-best month for exports in 2013.
Empty-container movements fell 12.7% to 121,011 TEUs, Long Beach reported.
In South Carolina, the Port of Charleston saw a 6.1% volume increase in November over last year to 133,481 TEUs, the South Carolina Ports Authority said. Exports are driving much of the increase, and they have increased 12.5% this year over the same period in 2012.
The Port of Georgetown, which does not move containers, has seen a 21% cargo increase so far in this fiscal year over the last one. It moved 36,206 tons in November, SCPA said.
