Cargo Volumes Rise to Record at Port of N.Y.-N.J.
The Port of New York and New Jersey set a record for annual cargo volumes in 2015 by more than 10%.
During 2015, the port said it handled 6.4 million 20-foot-equivalent units, or 3.7 million cargo containers, an increase of 10.4% over 2014, when the previous annual record was established.
It said the record volumes allowed the port to maintain its position as the busiest on the East Coast with nearly 30% of the total market share. Despite the increase in cargo, the port said it has experienced a 33% reduction in port emissions and pollutants since 2006 due to environmental initiatives.
ExpressRail, the port’s ship-to-rail system serving New York and New Jersey marine terminals, set a record by handling 522,244 containers. That marked a 12.2% increase over 2014, the previous best year for rail activity, it said.
