Chicago Manufacturing Activity Expands in May

Manufacturing activity in the Chicago area expanded in May, the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago said Friday.

ISM’s business index rose to a reading of 58.7 from 49 in April. Readings less than 50 indicate contraction.

Economists had forecast a reading of 50, Bloomberg News reported.

Chicago is a major center of U.S. manufacturing, which is one of trucking’s largest and most important customers.
