Class 8 Truck Sales Jump 38.2%

Torrid Half-Year Pace Highest Since 1999 Record

.S. sales of Class 8 trucks jumped 38.2% in June from year-ago levels, and reached their highest monthly total since December 1999, as fleets’ buying spree continued.

Truck manufacturers and analysts said the forces that have pushed the market all year were behind the torrid buying, namely the need to replace aging equipment, a pre-buy before new diesel engine emission rules begin in 2007 and strong demand for freight hauling.

Some said the demand for new trucks exceeded replacement needs and that fleet expansion was helping to push sales.
