Comment Period Opens Over Reflectors on Rail Cars

The Federal Railroad Administration is seeking public comment on whether railroad cars should be fitted with reflective materials that would make it easier to see them at grade crossings.

The decision to open the issue, known as railcar conspicuity, to public input comes on the heels of a Dec. 29 request for a ruling by state trucking associations in South Dakota, Wyoming and Mississippi, as well as the Wyoming Farm Bureau.

FRA spokeswoman Pamela Barry said the request for comments stems from a 1994 congressional requirement to review existing laws to determine whether mandatory reflective tape or other devices on railcars would reduce accidents and injuries.
