Computers Blamed for Savannah Port Delays

New gate-clearance technology implemented Oct. 9 at the Port of Savannah was blamed for excessive delays for truckers and a severe reduction in the amount of freight moved.

The new computer system was supposed to speed truckers in and out of the port. Instead, it produced three-hour delays and cut the number of containers moved from an average of 1,100 a day to 300.

The situation reportedly worsened the tense relationship that already exists between draymen and the port. Drivers have been working with the Teamsters union on an organizing campaign that port operators oppose.

Port officials said Oct. 12 that the delays were easing, but port drivers disputed that claim.
