Con-way Adds Safety Technology to New Tractors

Con-way Truckload said it is investing $2 million in safety technology for all of its new tractors in 2013.

The Con-Way Inc. subsidiary said it is adding front-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning and electronic stability control to all the 525 tractors it will take delivery on this year.

The front-collision avoidance system — by Bendix Commercial Vehicles Systems for Con-way’s Kenworth and Navistar tractors and by Meritor Inc. for its Freightliner tractors — uses forward-looking radar and sounds an alarm when the truck is less than a safe stopping distance from the vehicle it is approaching. If the driver doesn’t take action the system begins breaking the truck independently.

The Takata Corp. lane-departure warning system alerts a driver if the vehicle begins veering unintentionally into another lane, and the electronic stability control, developed by Bendix, automatically corrects vehicle speed to prevent potential rollover incidents.

“These systems will serve to supplement our drivers’ skills and good habits and help us contribute to safer roadways for all who travel them,” Con-Way Truckload President Saul Gonzalez said in a statement.

Con-way Inc. is ranked No. 3 on the Transport Topics Top 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
