Mechanics at the Con-way Freight facility in Gary/Hammond, Indiana, rejected a vote to be represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union.

The March 5 vote was conducted by the National Labor Relations Board, Con-way said in a statement.

A Con-way spokesman said the vote was the first involving its mechanics and the IAM. The union did not have an immediate comment.

Con-way Inc., which ranks No. 4 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers, has won five of eight elections contested with the Teamsters union.

The company said Con-way Freight, its less-than-truckload and largest unit, currently does not have a union contract at any of its nearly 300 U.S. locations.

The Teamsters canceled a Florida vote last month, after previously canceling a California election.

“We remain convinced that our path to success lies in maintaining an open, respectful and direct relationship with our employees without the interference of a third party,” Con-way Freight President Greg Lehmkuhl said.

“Our experience has been that when our employees have the opportunity to get the facts, understand clearly the value of what they have today and recognize the advantages and opportunities they have in being union-free, they choose to reject union representation,” he said in a statement.
