Congress Set to Resume Work on Multiyear Highway Bill

eaders in both the House and Senate said they were ready to begin work on a new multiyear highway funding bill that would closely resemble the measure Congress was unable to approve last year. That measure failed largely because lawmakers wanted to spend more money than President Bush would approve.

Some lawmakers expressed concern that financial problems would again stand in the way.

“We are concerned that inadequate levels of investment in our nation’s infrastructure will again prevent a multiyear highway bill from being enacted,” wrote Senate Environment and Public Works Committee chairman Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), and 23 other Senate Republicans in a Jan. 26 letter to Bush.
