Connecticut DOT Asks Twin Trailors to Re-route

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is again asking motor carriers to re-route twin trailers around certain sections of the states highways during winter storms.

CONNDOT is requesting twin trailer combinations stay away from section of Interstate 84, mainly the hilly portion between Danbury and Waterbury and the section that runs east of Vernon to the Massachusetts State Line, where twin trailers have gotten stuck in the snow in winters past.

"There are some very long hills in the Waterbury area and in Eastern Connecticut where these trucks do have difficulty when there is a heavy snow and once they go down, everything else follows," said Mike Riley, president of the Motor Transportation Association of Connecticut.

Mr. Riley said MTAC has worked with CONNDOT on similar requests for the past five winters and the partnership has always been satisfactory. CONNDOT has warned, however, that if voluntary compliance is not achieved it will consider issuing winter storm truck traffic regulations.
