Consumer confidence declined in February, the New York-based Conference Board said Feb. 25.

The group’s monthly index fell to a reading of 78.1 from 79.4 a month earlier, the group said.

The reading was below economists’ median forecast of an 80 reading, Bloomberg News reported. Estimates from economists ranged from 75 to 86.

An improvement in confidence may increase consumer spending, which accounts for 70% of the economy.
