Consumer confidence declined in April, the New York-based Conference Board said.

The group’s monthly index fell to a reading of 82.3 from 83.9 a month earlier, the group said April 29.

Economists’ median forecast was 83.2, Bloomberg News reported. Estimates ranged from 75 to 86.

An improvement in confidence may increase consumer spending, which accounts for 70% of the economy.
