The Port of Charleston, S.C., said its container volume rose for the first seven months of its fiscal year — from July through January.

Container volume increased 5.5% to 942,013 20-foot equivalent units, compared with the same period last year. It handled 129,562 TEUs in January, a 7% increase over the same month last year.

“Container volume in Charleston has grown consistently year-over-year since fiscal year 2010. We remain a top-10 port, and through our efforts to deepen the harbor and prepare for big ships to call in greater frequency, we are poised to meet the future growth of the industry and remain a leader in our competitive region,” said Jim Newsome, CEO of the South Carolina Ports Authority.

The SCPA also said it has approved three terminal maintenance projects in Charleston including wharf substructure maintenance repairs at its Columbus Street terminal.
