Container volume at South Carolina ports increased 13.3% in August from the same month last year, according to the state’s port authority.

The South Carolina Ports Authority handled 163,970 20-foot equivalent units last month and said volume from July increased 6.5% to 153,916 units.

Fiscal year-to-date, volume has increased 13% to 298,565 TEUs in July and August, according to SCPA.

“Strong container volumes are driving exceptional fiscal year-to-date operating earnings, which were nearly 70% higher than last July and August,” SCPA President Jim Newsome said in a statement.

“Over the next several months, we will be watching the development of vessel sharing agreements and evaluating the impacts they will have on our FY2015 volumes, as well as implementing our new customer contract approach,” he added.

The Georgetown port increased noncontainerized cargo 6.6% to 124,080 pier tons in July and August from the same time last year.

The port authority also approved a $1.24 million upgrade to ship-to-shore cranes at the Wando Welch Terminal, necessary for larger ships entering the port.
