Cummins Unveils Cleaner Engine

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Cummins Engine Co. is replacing a longtime staple of its product line with a new model that will meet stricter federal emissions standards.

Company officials said the ISX engine line will “serve all the same markets” as the N14 line, which has been the company’s premier engine platform for more than 40 years.

The ISX engines, which range from 400 to 600 horsepower, along with the Signature 600, a high horsepower engine unveiled in 1997, will be made compliant with future Environmental Protection Agency standards, which require reducing nitrogen oxide emissions to 2.5 grams by Oct. 2, 2002 (10-26, p. 120). The current rule limits NOx emissions to four grams for each brake-horsepower-hour or six grams at high speeds.

The new engines, which company officials called “the latest entry to the company’s $1 billion investment,” were unveiled at an Aug. 26 news conference at the company’s headquarters here.

The ISX platform is marketed under the trade name Interact System, which also includes the ISB, a 24-valve engine for the medium-duty automotive market, and the Signature 600, a high-horsepower electronic dual overhead cam engine.

This fall, the company plans to “extend the depth of our ISX product line with the new ISX 475, and the ISX 475 ST2 for high-horsepower fleets,” said Martha Brooks, vice president

f worldwide marketing.
