Daimler Plans $120 Million Investment at Detroit Plant; Hosts Visit by President Obama
REDFORD, Mich. — Daimler Trucks North America announced that it will produce its new automated manual transmission at its Detroit engine plant here, and the company hosted a visit Monday by President Obama.
Martin Daum, DTNA’s president, said the company would invest $120 million building the transmission line here and an assembly line to produce the company’s new asymmetrical turbocharger.
The two lines will employ about 250 new workers throughout the plant, including about 170 assembly workers.
President Obama attended a ceremony at the sprawling factory here on the edge of Detroit that produces most of the engines that power the company’s Freightliner and Western Star trucks.
“If you want to make the best cars and trucks in the world . . . you should invest in the United States of America,” Obama said.
Andreas Renschler, head of Daimler Trucks and Buses worldwide, said in a statement, “Under the umbrella of our Detroit-brand components, we combine engines, axles and transmissions into an efficient, fully integrated powertrain [and] will offer this powertrain portfolio in all our U.S. trucks in the future.”
