Daimler Trucks North America will cut production at two North Carolina manufacturing plants effective in May, due to “deteriorating economic and market conditions” and a “significant decline in new truck orders.”

The company said it notified state officials of the reductions, which could affect up to 500 jobs, following notification of union officials and employees.

The affected facilities are the Cleveland, N.C., truck manufacturing plant and associated pre-delivery inspection facility, and the Gastonia, N.C., components and logistics plant.

Reductions in force for both plants that were previously announced in January will be effective this Friday, March 13. (Click here for previous coverage.)

The Cleveland TMP will discontinue its second shift Friday, affecting 1,290 production line and related positions, the company said Monday in an e-mailed statement.

The new announcement covers an additional 420 positions and will take effect May 8.

The Gastonia plant had previously announced a workforce adjustment of 275 shop positions, also effective March 13. The new announcement covers an additional 80 shop employees, effective May 8.

Daimler, parent of Freightliner Trucks, late last month opened a Freightliner plant in Mexico that will produce the company’s new Cascadia model.
