OXON HILL, Md. — Daimler Trucks North America showed off its new version of the Freightliner Cascadia that meets January 2014 federal greenhouse gas standards, touting its commitment to fuel economy while hosting Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood here Wednesday.
LaHood praised Daimler for its manufacturing efforts on environmentally sound vehicles and also urged Congress to end “bickering and partisanship” and pass a multi-year highway bill.
The Wednesday morning event held here for reporters was part of a broader conference that included Freightliner dealers.
CEO Martin Daum said DTNA’s Freightliner and Detroit engines units are now within striking distance of his goal announced in 2010 to hit 10 miles per gallon for trucks.
The new Cascadia Evolution averaged almost 10.7 mpg on a test track and 9.3 mpg in road tests — a 7% improvement over the 2010 Cascadias, company officials said.
