Daimler AG said Wednesday its trucks unit’s second-quarter operating profit jumped 58% from a year ago, to $685 million.
Daimler Trucks’ unit sales rose 9% to 91,500 vehicles worldwide in the quarter, with revenue growth of 14% to $9.5 billion, the Germany-based company said in a statement.
Daimler, which makes Freightliner and Western Star brand trucks in North America, said its U.S. truck sales jumped 50% in the quarter from a year ago, to 23,302 units.
Daimler said its Classes 6-8 market share in North America was 31.9% in the quarter, up from 31% a year ago.
U.S. market share for those classes was 33.5%, “primarily due to the excellent competitive position of our heavy-duty [Environmental Protection Agency 2010] compliant engines,” Daimler said in a statement.
