Deaton Boosts Driver Pay

Deaton Inc., a flatbed and dry van truckload carrier based in Birmingham, Ala., has boosted mileage pay for drivers by an average of 12%, with pay rates for the most experienced drivers rising more than 21%.

President Jerry Crews said the company is hopeful that the extra pay will attract better quality drivers and improve service to customers.

“We believe that these payroll levels, together with a brand new tractor fleet, places us in a leadership position in terms of driver pay and benefits,” Crews said.

The new pay scales range from 27 cents per mile for drivers with less than one year of experience to 35 cents per mile for drivers with more than five years’ experience. Previously, the pay ranged from 26 cents to 29 cents per mile.

With the increase in base pay, stop-off pay will be reduced to $10 per stop, tarp pay will be adjusted to $15 and the terminal fuel bonus will be eliminated, the company said.

In addition, drivers who are paid on a percentage of revenue basis will be entitled to a 2% bonus if monthly revenue exceeds $11,000.

The increases take effect Aug. 15.
