Sales of Class 8 trucks in the United States continued to slump in June 2000, with the biggest sales drop —23.1% — posted by the biggest of the original equipment manufacturers, Freightliner in Portland, Ore.
Overall, the first six months of the year saw a 4.5% drop in Class 8 sales, from 127,568 in the first half of 1999 to 121,766 in 2000.
For the month of June, total Class 8 sales were 21,818, a drop of 9.7% from the 24,153 sold in June 1999, according to Ward’s Communications of Southfield, Mich.
As a matter of perspective, sales in 2000, although trailing 1999 by healthy margins, are more than 20% higher than those of 1998.
