DEF Prices Hold at $2.79 From November to December

The retail pump price of diesel exhaust fluid at U.S. truck stops was flat from November to December, remaining at $2.79 a gallon, Integer Research Ltd. said Wednesday.

Integer also said in its DEF Tracker publication that the number of U.S. travel centers selling DEF should hit 1,000 by the middle of February, based on recent growth rates.

The price of DEF in Canadian trucks was also flat, remaining at 80 Canadian cents per liter.

DEF is a mixture of urea and distilled water that is necessary for trucks using selective catalytic reduction technology.

Integer’s DEF Tracker said the stability resulted from “a relatively stable period of raw material pricing” for urea — a compound of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen — that is often used as fertilizer.

The consulting firm also found that while retail prices were flat, wholesale prices declined by “marginal” levels for buyers purchasing in full or partial tank truck lots.
