Delaware DOT to Install Off-Highway Virtual Weigh Station

In order to police trucks that are trying to bypass weigh-in inspection stations, the Delaware Department of Transportation announced the installation of a virtual weigh station along State Route 1 near the central part of the state.

Work on the virtual weigh station, or VWS, kicked off Aug. 15, and is expected to last through mid-September. It will be located near the Exit 119/North Smyrna Rest Area between the cities of Newark and Dover.

Construction crews will install junction wells, pole bases, cabinet bases, road sensors and detector loops. Lane and shoulder closures on State Route 1 are likely at the end of August.

The virtual station is designed to collect real-time data to provide vehicle records and traffic surveillance updates to enforcement officials. By monitoring oversize truck traffic, the agency intends to protect bridge structures from large vehicles.

“VWS is more efficient than a traditional weigh station because it is operated by existing staff based at another location,” according to the state DOT.

Trucking executives have recognized the First State as a premier freight corridor in the Northeast.
