Delaware Law to Require Backup Warning Devices for Trucks

Heavy trucks based in Delaware will soon have to be equipped with devices that can warn drivers or bystanders when the vehicles are backing up.

Gov. Jack Markell (D) signed the legislation Aug. 30 that will apply to all vehicles weighing more than 26,000 lbs. Each truck will have to have an audible reverse signal that bystanders can hear or a warning system or backup camera that can tell a driver if the vehicle is at risk of hitting something while backing up.

The requirement will take effect Jan. 1, 2014, and those who do not comply will be fined $75. The law exempts farm vehicles.
