Diesel fuel fell to a four-year low, dropping 4.3 cents to a national average of $2.087 a gallon, the Energy Department said Monday.

The price was the lowest since trucking’s main fuel averaged $2.02 a gallon on Feb. 21, 2005.

The downturn left diesel $1.571 below the same week last year and $2.677 below the $4.764 record set last July.

Gasoline, meanwhile, rose 2.5 cents to $1.934 a gallon, marking the seventh increase in the past nine weeks since a low of $1.613 at the end of last year.

The drop left gas $1.228 below the same week last year and $2.18 under the record $4.114 set last July.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
