Diesel Drops 4.2¢ to $4.088 in Second Straight Decline; Gas Falls 4.9¢ to $3.71

Diesel and gasoline both fell for a second straight week, with diesel dropping 4.2 cents to $4.088 a gallon and gas down 4.9 cents to $3.71, the Department of Energy reported.

Trucking’s main fuel had jumped 26.5 cents in six straight gains prior to the downturns, and its $4.159 price two weeks ago was the highest since August 2008.

Gasoline had previously jumped 53 cents in 11 straight increases, according to DOE records.

The declines left diesel 3.5 cents below a year ago, while gas is now 11.9 cents below the same week last year, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

Oil rose for a third day Monday, gaining 11 cents to close the trading day at $92.06 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, Bloomberg News reported.

It was the first time that crude futures had finished over $92 this month, Bloomberg figures showed.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
