Diesel fuel’s national average price fell 1.4 cents to $2.594 a gallon, its second straight decline following almost two months of increases, the Department of Energy said Monday.

The decline left diesel $2.133 below the same week last year, when diesel was near its all-time high of $4.764, set on July 14, 2008.

Trucking’s main fuel dipped 0.8 cent last week; prior to that it had gained 43.1 cents in the seven weeks of increases through June 22.

Gasoline, meanwhile, declined 3 cents to $2.612, one year after it hit a record high $4.114 a gallon. Monday’s gas price is $1.502 below that record.

Gas had risen 65.4 cents over 11 straight weeks before falling 4.9 cents last week, according to DOE figures.

Crude oil futures fell $2.68, or 4%, to close the trading day Monday at $64.05 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, Bloomberg reported. Prices are up 44% this year.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
