Diesel fuel fell another 4.2 cents Monday, dropping to a four-year low national average price of $2.045, the Department of Energy said Monday.
The price was the lowest since trucking’s main fuel averaged $2.02 a gallon on Feb. 21, 2005, DOE records showed.
The downturn left trucking’s main fuel $1.774 below the same week last year and $2.719 below the $4.764 record set last July. It has fallen in 32 of the past 34 weeks.
Gasoline, meanwhile, rose 0.7 cent to $1.941 a gallon, marking the eighth increase in 10 weeks since bottoming out near a five-year low of $1.613 at the end of last year.
The drop left gas $1.284 below the same week last year and $2.173 below the record $4.114 set last July.
Diesel fell below $2 a gallon in the Midwest region, to $1.988 a gallon, while its regional high was $2.122, on the East Coast.
Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
