Diesel fuel jumped past the $3 mark Monday, gaining 6.8 cents to $3.032 a gallon, the Energy Department said following its weekly retail price survey.

The price had not topped $3 since late August 2006, according to DOE figures, and Monday’s price was 43.7 cents higher than the same week last year.

Diesel gained 4 cents last week and has risen 25.9 cents since mid-May.

Gasoline, meanwhile, rose 2.5 cents to $2.812, following a 3.1-cent decline last week. Monday’s price is 43.4 cents over the same week last year, DOE figures showed.

The increase was the biggest since April 2, when trucking’s main fuel jumped 11.4 cents, according to DOE records.

Crude oil prices spiked to repeated record highs last week, closing at more than $83 barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Thursday for the first time, Bloomberg reported.

The price topped $3 in all five DOE regions except the Gulf Coast, where it was $2.971, DOE said.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
