Diesel fuel’s national average price fell for a second consecutive week, sliding 2.5 cents to $2.884 a gallon, the Department of Energy said June 8.

The drop followed last week’s half-cent dip, which came in turn on the heels of six straight increases totaling 16 cents, according to DOE figures.

This week’s price is $1.008 less than the corresponding week a year ago, DOE said after its weekly survey of filling stations.

Gasoline’s average price was flat at $2.78, marking the first time the motor fuel has not increased in almost two months.

In seven previous gains it had jumped 37.2 cents, and its price is now 89.4 cents under the same week last year.

Crude oil fell almost $1 on June 8 to finish the New York Mercantile Exchange trading day at $58.14 per barrel, the lowest closing price in more than a week, Bloomberg News reported.

Each week, DOE surveys about 400 diesel filling stations and 800 gasoline stations to compile national average prices.
