Diesel Price Rises to $3.503 as Fluctuation Continues

2.7-Cent Increase Marks Fourth Gain Over Past Seven Weeks

Diesel prices rose slightly this week, climbing 2.7 cents per gallon to reach a national average of $3.503, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration data released Dec. 30.

Over the past seven weeks, prices have increased four times and decreased three times, yielding a net increase of 1.2 cents.

Year-Over-Year Comparison

Trucking’s main fuel is down 37.3 cents a gallon compared with this time a year ago, reflecting a continued trend of falling prices compared with 2023 levels. West Coast subregion California has experienced the highest drop in prices from a year ago at 60.8 cents.

Regional Analysis

East Coast (PADD 1): Diesel prices in the East Coast region rose 1.9 cents to average $3.587 per gallon, closely mirroring the national trend. Subregional movements highlight slight divergences:

• New England (PADD 1A): Prices edged down by four-tenths of a cent to $3.753, maintaining a steep year-over-year drop of 58.1 cents.

• Central Atlantic (PADD 1B): A modest increase of 1.1 cents brought the average to $3.774 per gallon.

• Lower Atlantic (PADD 1C): Prices rose 2.5 cents to $3.501, reflecting moderate upward momentum.

Midwest (PADD 2): The Midwest experienced a 2-cent increase, reaching an average of $3.469 per gallon. The region has recorded relatively stable pricing throughout December and continues to show the smallest year-over-year decline nationally at 28.1 cents.

Gulf Coast (PADD 3): At $3.196 per gallon, Gulf Coast diesel prices rose by 4.2 cents, the largest increase of any region this week. Despite this jump, the region retains its status as the least expensive for diesel nationwide, with prices down 36.9 cents year over year.

Rocky Mountain (PADD 4): The Rocky Mountain region saw an increase of 4.2 cents, bringing the average to $3.37 per gallon. The area continues to exhibit one of the sharpest year-over-year declines, down 51.7 cents.

West Coast (PADD 5): The West Coast reported mixed trends this week:

• West Coast less California: Prices surged by 6 cents to $3.705, representing the steepest regional increase.

• California: Diesel prices slipped four-tenths of a cent to $4.576, maintaining the highest average price nationwide.

Gasoline Update

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline dipped 1.8 cents to $3.006. That's down 8.3 cents from this time a year ago.
