Diesel posted its third straight weekly increase, gaining 0.7 cent to a national average retail price of $3.073 per gallon, the Department of Energy said Monday.

Gasoline also rose for a third week, rising 1.5 cents to $2.834 a gallon, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations.

The diesel bump followed a 6.6-cent spike last week and 4.9-cent jump two weeks ago. The three consecutive gains have lifted the price 12.2 cents this month.

Monday’s upturns were the fifth in six weeks for both diesel and gasoline. Diesel is now 36.8 cents higher than the same week last year, while gas is 26 cents more expensive than a year ago.

Oil has traded at more than $80 a barrel this month, prompting the recent increases.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
