The Department of Transportation’s February freight transportation services index rose 4.1% from a year earlier, DOT said Wednesday.

The freight TSI, at a reading of 106.5, was down 1.5% from January, the department said in its monthly report.

Freight shipments are 12.9% over the index’s recent low in April 2009, when they were at their lowest level since July 1997.

The peak reading for the index was 113.3, in January 2005.  DOT uses a reading of 100 from the year 2000 as a baseline reading.

The TSI measures the output of the for-hire freight transportation industry including trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight.
