The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index declined in December from the highest level on record the prior month, DOT said Feb. 12.

The freight TSI declined 1% to 116.5 from November’s upwardly revised record 117.7, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report.

The index rose 4.4% in December year-over-year, said DOT, which uses a baseline reading of 100 from the year 2000.

“The Freight TSI remained above its 2012 range for the 12th month in a row. Beginning with January, every month in 2013 exceeded the high point of 2012, 111.6, reached in December,” BTS said in its report.

November’s reading was revised from 116.5.

The freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries. They include railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
