The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 1.8% in June from the same month last year, but slipped from May, DOT said Wednesday.
The freight TSI declined 0.2% from May to a reading of 113.8, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report.
May’s reading was revised to 114.1 from an originally reported 114.3. DOT uses a baseline reading of 100 from the year 2000.
The index — which remained above its 2012 range for the sixth month in a row — dipped 0.1% in the second quarter from the first quarter, marking the first quarterly decline since September.
The freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
