DOT Puts SafeStat Figures On Line

A new feature of the Transportation Department’s SafeStat system enables motor carriers to check where they rank on the priority list for federal safety compliance reviews.

SafeStat — short for Safety Status Measurement System — was developed in the early 1990s to keep records on every one of the estimated 450,000 interstate trucking operations in the United States.

The Department of Transportation uses the system to target carriers for safety audits. And now carrier scores and information on the scoring mechanism are available to all via the Internet.

By accessing the SafeStat Web site at ai.volpe.dot.gov/, carriers can find out how likely it is that they will receive a visit from an Office of Motor Carrier Safety inspection team. The site was posted in December.
