The U.S. Department of Transportation is seeking applicants for FASTLANE grants worth a total of $850 million for freight and highway projects, the department announced on Oct. 28.

FASTLANE stands for “Fostering Advancements in Shipping and Transportation for the Long-term Achievement of National Efficiencies." Applications must be received by Dec. 15.

DOT awarded $759.2 million in FASTLANE grants in fiscal 2016, the first year of the program, from among 212 applicants seeking $9.8 billion in funding. The department said the grants it awarded leveraged $3.6 billion more in additional funding from federal, state, local and private sources.

"Across the country, there are sidelined projects that are essential to America's cities and our transportation network," U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. [These grants] "give us an opportunity to identify and invest strategically in those projects that are critical to keeping our nation's economic engine running."
