Dot.com Merger May Signal Onset Of Online Service Consolidation

The first shot in what is expected to be a rapid consolidation of Internet-based transportation companies was fired last week with a proposed merger of Logistics.com and QuoteShip.com.

The combined operation will be the first to provide online procurement services for shippers and carriers across all modes of transportation, company officials said in announcing the deal June 27.

Logistics.com of Burlington, Mass., provides decision support software for shippers and carriers. It also conducts online freight auctions for large shippers such as Procter & Gamble, Kraft, Colgate-Palmolive, Ford Motor Co. and Wal-Mart Stores.
