The speed management provider E-Smart is adding a backing speed limiter feature for facilities to its services, the company announced April 22.
E-Smart Reverse was designed to reduce the potential for accidents at company and customer facilities. The feature allows companies to set maximum reverse speeds for commercial vehicles on their properties by leveraging geofencing. E-Smart also noted that the feature is built upon its existing dynamic speed management solution for private facilities.
“By some estimates, backing crashes represent about 30% of commercial vehicle accidents, and most of those are preventable,” said Joe Thell, senior vice president at E-Smart. “With E-Smart Reverse, we can help make yards even safer. By enabling the ability to limit backing speeds in company-specified speed zones, this latest feature of our Dynamic Speed Management technology reduces the all-too-frequent occurrence of backing accidents.”
E-Smart limits the throttle and prevents the vehicle from exceeding the set threshold if a driver attempts to go faster in reverse than allowed. The system integrates with onboard telematics units and can determine the location of vehicles by using advanced positioning technology. The fleets using the system can manage and customize vehicle speeds by using a customer portal.
