Engine Without Camshaft Is International’s Next Step

Forget alternative fuels. “Clean diesel” is the way to go, and a division of International Truck and Engine Corp. thinks it has the technology to get there.

That’s the message delivered by company executives and engineers, who were showing trucking and automotive reporters a camless engine running in a city tractor. They also displayed International’s small V-6 and V-8 diesels that will power light trucks and sport utility vehicles produced by Ford Motor Co.

The Engine Group at International sees the small diesel power plants as accounting for the great bulk of its production volume in coming years.

International’s “electro-hydraulic” technology, first introduced on HEUI engines in 1994, will provide the flexibility to meet and exceed diesel exhaust emissions standards for the foreseeable future, said Dan Ustian, president of the division.
