Moving company England Van Lines said it plans to retrofit its fleet with stop-start technology to allow drivers to coast through traffic lights without having to stop.
The new technology uses the wireless signals emitted by traffic lights to inform the driver of the exact speed to avoid the upcoming red lights, according to the San Jose, California-based company.
When a stop is required the vehicle automatically will cut the engine to conserve energy. The company plans on adding the feature on its fleet of moving trucks in San Jose.
“We believe this will help us reduce fuel expenditures, and, more importantly, drastically reduce the amount of time our drivers need to spend on the road. During cross-country trips, we should see enormous returns. These new technology investments will also positively impact the environment, and we’re always wary of that as well,” a company spokesperson said in a statement.
The company said it previously installed computer processors in its fleet that use cameras to survey the environment and inform the driver how to drive defensively in heavy traffic or poor weather.
