EPA Revises Tank Cleaning Rules

Many tank truck companies may have to formalize their waste management plans and take more care with cargo residue because of transportation equipment cleaning rules enacted by the Environmental Protection Agency.

However, industry officials say they now have no qualms with the agency’s final proposal.

EPA officials said the rule will affect 1,239 companies nationwide. The agency also said it will cost more than $16 million to reduce the annual discharge of major pollutants by at least 60,000 pounds.

Industry representatives originally said the plan was based on flawed research and unnecessarily costly and restrictive. However, after negotiating with the agency, they now say that the regulation is much improved.
