Tanya Meekins, spokeswoman for EPA’s air and transportation division, said California and New York had submitted the requests, but that EPA had set no target date to render a decision.

Meekins said the states had only asked for waivers from rules requiring them to use reformulated gasoline and that so far, the agency had received no such waiver requests related to diesel fuels.

Diesel is by far the dominant fuel used in trucking, and it powers nearly all big rigs. However, gasoline is not only used in most passenger cars but also in some truck-freight operations for smaller delivery vehicles.
