LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. With safety a constant concern among trucking companies, the Truckload Carriers Association took time to honor and highlight operations that have done an exceptional job. It also recognized people who have contributed to improving the field.
A U.S. carrier and another up in Canada were recipients of the grand prizes in the 1999 National Fleet Safety Contest. The awards were presented March 21 at TCA’s annual meeting.
Sherman Brothers Heavy Trucking of Harrisburg, Ore., and MacKinnon Transport of Guelph, Ontario, were the top honorees. Sherman Brothers won the prize for truckload companies operating more than 25 million miles a year, and MacKinnon did so for firms running less than 25 million miles annually.
The two carriers were chosen for the excellence of their safety programs, both on- and off-highway. The selection process began with judges determining the top companies in each of six mileage divisions, whose winners were picked based on accident frequency only. The top three winners in each division then competed for the two grand prizes.
