Faulty Antilock Brakes Prompts Recall of 300,000 Trucks, Buses

American manufacturers are recalling 300,000 trucks, buses and emergency service vehicles because of a defect that could cause the brakes to fail.

Some 46,000 of the recalled vehicles are either school or transit buses. The rest are fire and emergency vehicles and trucks in classes 6 through 8.

The recalls cover vehicles produced since 1998 that use antilock air brakes made by Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, a division of Honeywell International.

Vehicles inspected during the recall will be checked for two problems, according to Tom Musgrave, group director for Bendix: Electronic Control Units designated EC-17-1030R and chafed or frayed sensor wires at the wheel ends.
